"Your eyes look like two pissholes in the snow".
That's about the most vivid description i have ever heard for "you look tired".

Well i'm finally onto discussing the train race, just not quite how i anticipated.
Oh how glorious things were just a few months ago, all sweetness and light, yours truly preparing to take on the world. Well then i had to skip the That Dam Ride because i hadn't got enough training in, but that was ok because i could still do a 500km weekend to build up for the 7 day record. And then that got the kybosh when the bike had a tantrum 30kms in, but there were still other options to make the 7 day record happen. And then my wife found out she was pregnant, so the 7 day record was pretty much shot, but i could still do the Noosa Century. And then i got triple shifts at my night job so the Century didn't happen, but there was still a week and a half or so to get ready for the 200km race against the steam train from Warwick to Goondiwindi. But then on Saturday night i found out they still haven't found a replacement for the ex-employee i'm covering for, so i'll be on triple shifts for at least another week. And so that is that. Between now and B Day there are no competitive cycling opportunities left at all. Now i know that competitive cycling and fatherhood aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, but being a good father is a bigger priority by some considerable margin, and i can see it being very likely that doing so won't leave sufficient time to do both. Hell there is currently no baby and i can't get enough time together to realise my potential. So it looks like my 'career' as a competitive cyclist (well i did manage one race win) is over, and i'm understandably a bit torn up about it. We'll see what the future brings. In the meantime though, there is still the housewarming ride to be done! There's a thread about it (naturally) but the short story is, many kms, much dirt, great scenery. And speaking of the house itself, the chippy has just fitted all the internal doors and finished the framework for the back patio, while i've made myself busy(er) with a caulking gun and god knows how many tubes of gap sealer on the outside. I've got several 14hr days and one of around 43hrs, so i'll probably be a bit quiet til the weekend :-). Fair Winds, LDR. Now don't get me wrong, i think it's great that i'll be able to retire in only 42 years, but gee some days i feel like a wee bit of a rest.
Take the other day for example, up at 6am for work at the pool shop, knock off late which meant less than an hour nap before heading to the servo. Bearing that in mind, i think i can be excused for almost charging a customer a 948.5 BILLION dollar credit card fee. I don't even know how i managed that, but luckily i caught it in time or it would have made balancing the till rather challenging. In due course i knocked off there and limped home, but with the steam train race looming on the horizon (i know i forgot to go into detail on that the other day, i'll get there eventually) i needed to squeeze some training in. Onto the Tarini, and in spite of the lack of sleep and the bone dry chain making my ears bleed, we ticked along pretty well on the flat at least (the climbs don't really bear mentioning). Sticking to the "listening to my body" thing, i decided to make it a "30/30", 30 minutes out with the tailwind and then try to get under 30 minutes on the way back into the headwind. That was helped in no small part by chasing a truck out of Peregian, i'd have had him for sure if it wasn't for the pissy little 52-12 top on the Tarini, by 57kmh i was spinning far too fast for my liking. Aside from that it was uneventful and i managed to get back with 30 seconds up my sleeve. Then it was onto some general house duties before heading up to Noosa for another antenatal class. On the plus side, this time we were able to dispense with all the ice breaking introduction bullshit but a good 90% of what comes out of that midwife's mouth annoys the hell out of me. Just give me the brevet card and let's get on with it! Anyway with that out of the way it was 39 hours on the go, so i was pretty well buggered. Only a short spin on the trainer today, but should be a little more tomorrow, and maybe even a post about that steam train race. Fair Winds, LDR. "If you're about to tell me you like Turkish Delight i'll fucking divorce you!" Fair Winds, LDR. So i'll make this as quick as possible. I managed to get out on the bike this morning for a mostly uneventful 47k loop of the Maroochy river, save for a Crumbledore that looked to be burning almost as much oil as fuel, and a bagpipe band practicing at a park near Bli Bli. The legs don't feel too bad but i will need to really get onto it if i'm to be in good enough shape for the train race on June 6th (more on that tomorrow). On the house front, there has been some incredible progress. And best of all, the view out of the kitchen window... Not much longer now! Fair Winds, LDR. |
